Close to 200 physicians and nurses attended a day-long program on the management and treatment of brain tumors at West Jefferson Medical Center on November 10. Some of the most prominent physicians in the South lectured on treatment modalities. The event was sponsored by Culicchia Neurological Clinic and West Jefferson Medical Center.
Frank Culicchia, M.D., neurosurgeon, hosted the event with Ivo Tremont, M.D., neuro-oncologist, both of Culicchia Neurological Clinic. They were joined by top doctors in the field, including Nicolas Bazan, M.D., Ph.D., director of LSU’s Health Sciences Neuroscience Center of Excellence; Mark Gilbert, Deputy Chair of the department of neuro-oncology at M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and Sunil Patel, M.D., Clinical Vice-Chairman of the department of neurosciences at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Frank Culicchia M.D. is also chairman of LSU’s neurosurgery department and medical director of West Jefferson Medical Center’s CyberKnife radiosurgery system for treatment of tumors of the brain and spine. It is the only CyberKnife system in the entire state of Louisiana. Since its opening in January, 2006, patients from all over the region have traveled to New Orleans for treatment.
“CyberKnife offers new hope for patients by treating tumors without surgery,” Dr. Culicchia said. “In addition, CyberKnife is able to reach many tumors of the brain that surgery cannot. It’s a tremendous tool that we are now able to offer our patients.”
