Neurologist John Freiberg treats stroke patients every day and he reports that rapid advances are being made in the field of stroke care. Dr. Freiberg, who is also director of West Jefferson Medical Center’s Neurovascular Acute Stroke Unit, says that stroke physicians are in the process of expanding the window within which the clot busting drug tPA can be administered. This will lead to more patients being treated for stroke and those treated patients will have fewer neurological deficits and better ability to care for themselves and function in society.

One of the most striking things that Dr. Freiberg has noticed about stroke patients is that in spite of their sudden and often devastating loss of function, they almost always face their illness with courage and good spirits. He says that “seeing ordinary people display bravery and cheerfulness when their backs are against the wall is a privilege and blessing for me. Seeing this, day to day, keeps you humble and thankful.”

Dr. Freiberg is actively engaged in training neurology residents and medical students from Tulane and LSU medical schools.
