Dr. Walter Truax specializes in the treatment of stroke and works closely with patients to help them avoid a second stroke. “Once a person suffers a stroke, they have a ten times greater chance of having a second stroke,” explains Dr. Truax, who is also director of West Jefferson Medical Center’s rehabilitation unit.

According to Dr. Truax, advances being made in the treatment of secondary strokes are improving outcomes for patients. “Statin drugs, ace inhibitors, and anti-platelet drugs are making a positive difference in reducing secondary strokes,” he says. Dr. Truax lectures frequently on stroke prevention and collaborated on “Starting Now,” a program that educates stroke patients about secondary stroke prevention. His advice to patients is to “eat healthy, lose weight, don’t smoke, and exercise regularly.”

Dr. Truax practices what he preaches. He is an avid snow skier and enjoys sailing in his spare time.
